The ABC-CLIO reference publishing company is seeking a qualified scholar to author a “fact-check” book on illegal and legal drug use in America, past and present.
For more than 60 years, ABC-CLIO and its Praeger and Greenwood Press imprints have delivered award-winning collections of digital and print resources for secondary education, higher education, and public libraries. Our mission is to support educators and librarians in their work to foster 21st-century skills, independent critical thinking, and genuine exploration and understanding of the complex issues of our world—past, present, and future.
We have recently developed a new reference series concept called Contemporary Debates. Each title in this series—also sometimes referred to as Examining the Facts, which is the title subhead of each volume—provides an 80,000-word examination of the veracity of controversial claims or beliefs surrounding one political/cultural issue in the United States. The purpose of the series is to give general readers a clear and unbiased understanding of current issues by informing them about falsehoods, half-truths, and misconceptions–and confirming the factual validity of other assertions–that have gained traction in America’s political and cultural discourse. Each book in the Contemporary Debates series is intended to puncture rather than perpetuate myths that diminish our understanding of important policies and positions; to provide needed context for misleading statements and claims; and to confirm the factual accuracy of other assertions. In other words, volumes in this series are intended to clear the air surrounding some of the most contentious and misunderstood issues of our time—not just add another layer of obfuscation and uncertainty to the debate.
The first several volumes in this series have already been published to considerable critical and commercial acclaim. We are now turning our attention to the next several volumes in the series, and we’d like Drug Use in America (in both its legal and illegal iterations) to be one of them. Our hope is to publish the volume in late spring/summer of 2021, which would mean full manuscript delivery in late 2020 or early 2021.
