The American Institute of the History of Pharmacy is pleased to announce the opening of the 2022 AIHP Glenn Sonnedecker Prize competition. The Glenn Sonnedecker Prize recognizes the author(s) of the best unpublished manuscript, on a topic within the field of the history of pharmacy and pharmaceuticals, submitted in the annual competition.
The Prize is aimed at graduate students and Early Career Scholars (ECRs). (See eligibility requirements below.) Co-authored papers are eligible, provided that all listed authors meet the necessary Early Career Researcher criteria listed below.
The recipient of the AIHP Glenn Sonnedecker Prize will be awarded a $1,000 cash prize (co-authored papers will share the cash award), and the manuscript will be published in AIHP’s journal, History of Pharmacy and Pharmaceuticals, upon, and subject to, successful completion of peer- and editorial-review processes.
The deadline for submission of manuscripts for the 2022 competition is June 1, 2022. Authors wishing to participate in the competition should submit their manuscript (in Microsoft Word format) via email to aihp@aihp.org using the subject heading “Sonnedecker Prize Submission.” Manuscripts should be 8,000-10,000 words, and authors should consult the HoPP Author Guidelines when preparing their submission. Papers in languages other than English should be accompanied by a translation.
Submitted manuscripts will be evaluated and judged by a panel comprised of the Institute’s Historical Director and members of the Editorial Board of History of Pharmacy and Pharmaceuticals. AIHP will announce the recipient of the 2022 Sonnedecker Prize in August 2022.
Eligibility requirements are:
· The submitted manuscript must be a on topic related to the history of pharmacy or pharmaceuticals.
· The submitted manuscript must not have been published, currently committed for publication, or under consideration for publication at any other journal.
· The author(s) of the submitted manuscript must agree to allow publication of the manuscript in History of Pharmacy and Pharmaceuticals.
· The author(s) must be graduate students and/or Early Career Researchers (ECRs). AIHP defines ECRs as holders of tenure-track positions who received the PhD within the previous three years or members of the academic precariat in limited term positions who received the PhD within the previous six years.
Originally established in 2015, the AIHP Glenn Sonnedecker Prize honors Professor Glenn Sonnedecker, a distinguished historian of pharmacy, the longtime Director of the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy, and the founding editor of the Institute’s academic journal, Pharmacy in History, which changed its name to History of Pharmacy and Pharmaceuticals in 2021.
